Taper and travel

Race day is coming up quick. I should be hydrating, getting enough sleep, taking it a bit easier at home instead I am a road warrior this week. When it comes to my work travel schedule I have some flexibility. However, because my current study is slow (I'm not maintaining the required number of monthly visits as set by my company) I'm having to cover other visits/help where needed. Unfortunately, I don't get to say "no" about these visits or plan them according to my schedule. Last week I was volunteered/told I needed to cover a 2 day visit in Little Rock. Yeah, I already had an overnight trip planned to Minneapolis Monday / Tuesday. So now I find myself traveling Monday through late Thursday then I plan on putting a half day of work in on Friday then hitting the road in my car to make the drive to Cleveland.

Definitely not what I had planned for this week and it's not ideal but I am trying to make it work. I'm hydrating even more than normal because of all the flights and trying to find healthy eats. My hunger is in full force so the one positive of all this travel is my work has to pay for my food ;) I'm not sleeping as much as I should or able to get all the miles I should but otherwise the taper monster is staying at bay. I guess I'm too busy to freak out! I hope this means only good things for race morning in Cleveland.

A day in my traveling life

There hasn't been much time in my schedule to do anything other than work. Last month I was assigned to a second study that should have been 50% of my time. Instead I have 2 100% studies. I'm tired! My weekends are now spent running a little, cleaning, and recovering on the couch from the week of travel before I go back out and do it all over again on Monday. I am now spending very limited time on the computer and reading blogs has been relegated to my phone while I wait in the airport. So I haven't been commenting or reading as much as I would like.

A few weeks ago while in Boise, ID I decided to document a day of my life on the road. It's not very exciting but it's my life for the last 9 years. Sometimes I get to add in cancelled flights, delays, rude travelers, sweet travelers, and so on.

I always start my day on the road with the Today Show.
USA Today. My reading on the plane later.
Trying to scrape the frost with a credit card. Always a good time.
No fancy hotels for me; there's a low per diem. Luckily this was a nicer than most Hampton Inn and only 2 minutes from the research site.
My office for the day
Subway is my go to lunch. At my desk of course. I'm trying to get done early to catch an earlier flight home.
Heading to the airport

Being nice and having status helped me catch the direct flight home instead of my scheduled layover in Denver. Now it's time to settle in with some reading and recipes I won't have time to make because I'm not home.
Chicago at night. Love this view

Joy. 7:30pm and traffic is at a standstill leaving the airport.
After 8 pm and I'm finally home
A rarity... my husband made dinner and bought a bottle of wine. Love!
Night, night

stinks and shopping

Monday had me traveling to Texas so before the flight I decided to run one of my scheduled 12 mile runs for the week. Technically the first 12 miles of the week should have been done Tuesday but Monday was a cool day in the city I didn't want to try to figure out where to run in the Texas heat or that long on a treadmill.

The run turned into a gag fest. First, the lake had kicked up some nasty seaweed and other miscellaneous junk and it was sitting on the concrete baking. Then, the pick-up and clean-up of port-o-potties remaining from the volleyball tournament was happening. I had to pass the truck twice. Finally, mix that with the city garbage truck pick-up of the extra garbage bins that were at the beach for the tournament as well. Yeah I nearly lost my shot bloks and water by mile 6.5! Nasty! After that I ended up finishing the 12 miles under 2 hours.

Since I was playing switcharoo with the schedule Tuesday I opted for 6 mile recovery run with 6x100 repeats on the treadmill. I was all excited when I finished up early on site which meant arriving at the next hotel early and hitting up the mill before the 5pm rush. On the drive to San Antonio I saw the signs for an outlet mall I've seen every other time. I told myself I wouldn't stop because I didn't have much room in the suitcase. Then I convinced myself I would stop and see if they had a Nike outlet as I love the Nike outlet but I wouldn't go anywhere else. Hahahaha. 2 hours later I walked out of that mall with a couple extra bags. And... I hit up Coach outlet hard. I had to pay to have the items shipped home. It's not all for me though I found great deals on some excellent birthday and Christmas gifts. Just doing my part to stimulate the economy :) So after all that I didn't arrive at the hotel until 5 pm. After some room key issues I finally made it down to the full workout room. Luckily there was 1 treadmill open! 6 miles felt long on the 'mill but the pick-ups helped pass the middle miles a little faster.

One more day in Texas then home for the long weekend! Let's hope I start September off right by having my flight take off on time. Every trip home in August end up delayed 3+ hours. That is a trend I do not want to continue!

Getting it Done

I haven't necessarily been the dedicated runner over weekends. Things keep coming up and this weekend was going to be no exception. Yet another bridal shower for a different friend this time. I know it may seem like I have a lot of friends. It just so happens that my two closest friends (and pretty much only friends in Chicago) are getting married the same month. So in my case it means busy weekends and a little need for some pre-planning which I am not too good doing. I knew not much was getting done tomorrow since the dang shower is a brunch and starts earlier and goes until mid-afternoon. Long day and I would be tired later. Instead I got my mid/long run done tonight. It's a mid distance run to others but the longest run I have done in awhile. 7 miles! In the cold. Yeah I was wearing shorts two days ago to run and today dressed in running tights, warm running turtleneck, gloves, and a hat. Spring where are you? I know I keep asking but all I am feeling is this cold, crappy weather. Maybe next week. After the Cubs home opener. Because if you are a true Cubs fan you know that there is never a warm home opener.

This week also brought about my last week of freedom from traveling for work. It was a blissful month of not having to go to the airport, hang out in an airport, get lost going to my hotel, so on and so forth. But as of April 1st I am traveling again. At to kick it all off a freaking 8 day meeting. It is going to suck. These kick off meetings are long. Think 7 am - 10 pm at night with approximately a 1 hour break. I may be going to Florida but I don't actually get to enjoy Florida. It could be in South Dakota for all I care. We sit in a conference room, have breakfast and lunch in a different conference room and are transported on a huge bus to a long dragged out dinner to schmooze. I despise schmoozing. I have no reason to schmooze. But before I leave on my last day of freedom I am going to bar to enjoy the home opener. I can't wait!
