It's February 1st and that means one thing. Okay maybe more but really one thing in my book. Registration for the 2008 Chicago Marathon opened today. Now you all may remember how much fun I had at my inaugural 2007 Chicago Marathon run. And because of that I feel like I need to take another crack at it. I don't really want my only memories of the Chicago Marathon to be tainted with what happened the first time. But then on the other hand I have a gazillion things going on this year. Usually I have nothing to do and I have time to train to keep me out trouble. Instead this year I am standing up in two dear friends weddings (back to back), I was just assigned to this crazy study in which I will be traveling a lot (no I did not get my lead position I was so desperately hoping for), and I have my own wedding to plan and partake in about 6 weeks before the big race. And with all that going on to I really have the extra money it takes to get me ready for the marathon (entry fees, fuel, new non-smelly workout clothes, shoes, etc)?!? It's a lot to think about. Plus the fact whenever I mention I am thinking about signing up everything gets this look of fear/shock/you're an idiot on their face and exclaims "Why? Are you crazy? Don't you remember what happened last year/Do you really have time to prepare with everything going on?" So all of their comments are kind of getting me down.
I'll let you know what I decide but in the meantime I would love to hear what you all have to think about my minor dilemma :)

That's a toughy Jam! I TOTALLY understand why you'd want to go back and I'd want to go back too! I'm all about the "I have to finish what I started" thang! I say, if you are going to do it, do it strictly just to finish and have fun! Not place any time goals on yourself. If you have a busy schedule your training may be a little lacking. This way it won't be just another stressful event added on ;-)
Don't listen to those non-runners nay saying you. (I'm one to talk with non-runner in my name! hah) These are the same people that ask how far is the marathon this year?!! Figure out what is right for you, my dear. If you want it, you'll figure out the time situation. Coffee Betsy has a great post on Runner's Lounge today about fitting it in. We're behind you no matter what you decide. ((HUGS))
I don't really have any advice about the marathon, since I've never run one and don't really know exactly how much training it involves. But good luck with the traveling! I'm embarking upon a lot of work travel in the next few weeks. You should use the opportunity to run lots of cool new places and tell us about it!
your non-running friends will never "get it". so their comments and the looks on their faces don't count - don't factor their reactions into your decision. you aren't crazy. you just have to do what is right for you - i totally understand the need to go back and finish what you started. i am about to do the same thing in a week. whether or not you have the time or finances to commit to it this year is not for me to say or advise on, but what i can say is this: if you do commit to finishing what you started in Chicago, you know you'll have a whole blogosphere of support right here - where everyone understands!
